Linear Welding & Fabrication: The Oakland Owner’s Guide
Linear gate operators in Oakland typically need welding or fabrication work when the arm bracket, hinge assembly, or mounting plate cracks under load - most jobs run $340-$780 installed depending on whether we’re repairing a single bracket or fabricating a custom mounting solution for an older Linear LC or LS series. We stock common Linear-compatible steel brackets and hardware on every truck, and most welding repairs in Oakland, Alameda, and the Fruitvale corridor are completed same day. The call usually starts with a gate that opens halfway and jams, or an operator that runs but the gate doesn’t move because the arm has separated from its mount.
Which Linear Models This Applies To
Linear welding and fabrication issues show up most often on the LC50, LC85, and LS150 swing-gate operators, plus the SLR and GSL slide-gate series when the mounting environment shifts - tree roots in Oakland hills neighborhoods, or the clay-heavy soil in the flatlands that settles differently than the original installer planned. The bracketry is stamped with a Linear part prefix: LC-series arms use a different bolt pattern than LS-series, and mixing them is a common mismatch we find after DIY attempts.
To identify what you need, check the operator label - usually inside the control box cover - for the model number and manufacture date. Pre-2018 LC units used a thicker gauge steel bracket (roughly 3/16″) that Linear later revised to a lighter formed-steel design. We keep both profiles in stock, plus the aftermarket equivalents from Elite Gate Systems that match the original geometry but use a slightly heavier gauge. For slide gates, the SLR trolley bracket and the GSL rear mount are the two fabrication points that fail; we measure on-site because Linear changed the trolley slot width in 2020 and the two versions are not interchangeable without welding modification.
We’re an independent service provider - not affiliated with Linear - so we source OEM when the exact fit matters and quality aftermarket when the geometry is standard and the price difference is significant. Adrian Vance will walk you through which route makes sense once he sees the failure.
Signs Your Linear Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

- Gate opens partially, then stops with a grinding noise. The arm bracket has cracked at the weld or the bolt holes have elongated, letting the arm shift under torque. The operator keeps running but the gate doesn’t follow, which burns out the motor if it goes on too long.
- Visible gap or wobble where the operator arm meets the gate frame. The mounting plate has pulled its welds or the through-bolts have wallowed out the holes. In Oakland’s coastal humidity, even galvanized brackets corrode at the weld seam faster than inland markets.
- Operator runs but gate doesn’t move, especially in cold morning hours. The arm has separated from the bracket entirely, or the hinge pin has sheared. The motor cycles against no load, which trips the internal limit switch out of position.
- Fresh scrape marks on the driveway or gate post. The gate has dropped on its hinges because the lower bracket weld failed, changing the swing geometry. The gate now drags or hits the stop before the operator expects it to.
- Repeated limit-switch problems after “adjustment.” The bracket is moving microscopically with each cycle, so no electronic adjustment stays set. We see this on hillside installs in the Oakland hills where seasonal ground movement works the bolts loose.
Before
AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
| Service | Typical Range (Oakland) | What’s Included |
|---|---|---|
| Bracket weld repair (single point) | $340-$480 | Remove failed weld, prep steel, re-weld, prime and paint, re-mount and align |
| Custom bracket fabrication (Linear-compatible) | $520-$780 | Measure, cut and form steel, weld, drill to Linear bolt pattern, install, test cycle count |
| Slide gate trolley bracket replacement | $440-$620 | Remove gate from track, replace or fabricate bracket, realign trolley, reset limits |
| Hinge rebuild with new pin and weld | $380-$560 | Cut old hinge, fabricate new pin boss, weld, rehang gate, adjust operator geometry |
What drives the range: steel thickness required (3/16″ vs 1/4″ for heavier gates), whether we can repair in place or need to remove the gate to the shop, and how much operator realignment is needed after the geometry changes. Every job gets a written price before we strike an arc - that’s Haven Standard Clause 1. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the weld or alignment shifts, we come back and make it right at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground and a hard stop. An owner can check whether the bracket bolts are loose with a socket set - we’ve found plenty that just need torque and thread-locking compound, especially on newer installs where the original technician skipped the Loctite. You can also photograph the bracket label and the crack pattern and text it to us; we’ll tell you whether it’s a weld repair or a full replacement before we dispatch.
The hard stop is the welding itself. Gate brackets are structural steel under cyclic load; a cold weld or wrong rod choice fails in months, not years. More importantly, the bracket holds an arm that can whip with significant force if it separates during operation. We don’t recommend DIY welding on loaded gate components any more than we’d recommend a homeowner weld a car control arm. The price we quote includes proper prep, the right filler for the steel grade, and the documentation - photos of the weld cross-section and the installed position - that tells the next technician what they’re looking at.
Tell me what it’s doing wrong, and I’ll tell you exactly what it needs. Call (628) 270-2709 and we’ll review what you’ve found. Estimates are free, and if you have a written quote from another company, we’ll review it at no cost under our second-opinion policy.
FAQs
A properly welded and primed bracket typically lasts 8-12 years in Oakland’s coastal environment, though properties within a half-mile of the bay see faster corrosion at the weld seam due to salt air. We use a zinc-rich primer on every fabrication job, which adds roughly 30% to the corrosion resistance compared to standard enamel. Call (628) 270-2709 if you’re seeing rust bloom at an existing weld - catching it early avoids full replacement.
Most cracks at the weld line can be repaired if the surrounding steel hasn’t thinned from corrosion or elongation. We grind out the crack, verify the parent metal thickness with a caliper, and weld only if there’s enough material to hold. If the bolt holes are wallowed beyond 1/8″ oversize or the bracket has been bent and straightened before, we fabricate new - a second repair on compromised steel fails faster. We’ll show you the measurement and explain which route we’re taking before we start.
Most bracket repairs are done in 2-3 hours on-site, including removal, welding, cooling, repaint, and reassembly. Custom fabrication for an older Linear model where OEM brackets are discontinued runs 4-5 hours, sometimes split across two visits if we need to pull the gate to the shop for track or frame welding. We don’t charge for the second trip if it’s part of the original scope - that’s covered under the quoted price.
We stock the common Linear arm brackets, hinge hardware, and slide-gate trolley components on every truck, plus raw steel stock for custom fabrication when the original part is obsolete. For the LC50 and LC85 series, we carry both the current Linear OEM bracket and the heavier aftermarket equivalent. If you have a rare variant - the early GSL with the narrow trolley slot, for instance - we’ll measure and fabricate same day rather than order and wait. Call (628) 270-2709 with your model number and we’ll confirm what’s on the truck.
