BFT Welding & Fabrication: The Oakland Owner’s Guide
We stock and install BFT-compatible welded gate components, custom bracketry, and repair-fabricated arms for Oakland properties, with most completed jobs running $340-$780 depending on material gauge and whether the gate is single or dual swing. Same-day welding service is available when the gate is stuck open or the arm bracket has sheared. Most Oakland owners discover the problem when their BFT operator runs but the gate doesn’t move, or when they spot fresh rust bleeding through a cracked weld at the hinge side.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT welding and fabrication work covers the subterranean hydraulic series (SUB, ECO-S), the above-ground electromechanical arms (IGEA, PHOBOS, LUX), and the heavy-duty commercial line (THALIA, ERGON). The critical compatibility point is the mounting footprint, not just the motor label. BFT’s IGEA and PHOBOS arms, for example, use a 6-bolt pattern on a 120mm x 120mm square plate, while the SUB series anchors to a welded U-channel that must be fabricated to exact depth for the underground oil reservoir to clear.
To identify what you need, check the silver BFT data plate on the motor housing for the model prefix and manufacturing date code. Pre-2018 PHOBOS units used a thinner 3mm arm bracket that cracks predictably under the load of a 16-foot aluminum gate; post-2018 units moved to 5mm steel. We fabricate both, but the price and weld prep differ. We also match OEM BFT brackets when the geometry is proprietary, though for most residential repairs we use A36 structural steel equivalents that outlast the original in Oakland’s salt-air corridor near the estuary. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with BFT.
Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

- The motor hums but the gate drags or stalls. This usually means the welded arm bracket has cracked at the stress riser where BFT’s casting meets the steel extension tube. The operator still cycles, but torque is lost through the fracture. We see this most on dual-swing setups where the gate leaf is heavier than the arm rating.
- Visible rust streaks below any weld joint. In Oakland’s marine-influenced climate, moisture wicks into incomplete welds or porosity from the factory. What looks like surface rust is often hollow metal behind it. We cut back to sound material, re-fabricate the joint, and hot-dip or powder-coat to match.
- The gate has dropped on one side and scrapes the driveway. The bottom hinge pin or welded gusset has failed. On older Oakland properties with custom iron gates, the original fabrication often used mild steel pins without bushings. We machine replacement pins from 4140 alloy and weld in oil-impregnated bronze bushings that last.
- Intermittent operation that clears up if you push the gate manually. The limit-switch cam is welded to the output shaft; when that weld fatigues, the cam slips and the board loses position reference. BFT’s PHOBOS BT A25 uses a brass cam that’s particularly prone to this after five to seven years of daily cycles.
- A loud clank at the end of travel. The mechanical stop bracket, usually a simple L-tab welded to the gate frame, has broken off or bent. Without it, the operator overtravels and stresses the internal gearbox. This is a ten-minute weld on site if caught early, a $900 gearbox if ignored.
Before
AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Most BFT welding and fabrication repairs in Oakland fall into three brackets: hinge and pin re-fabrication ($340-$520), arm bracket or stop-tab replacement ($280-$450), and full custom bracketry for non-standard gates ($580-$780). The range depends on material thickness, whether we can weld on-site or must pull the gate to the shop, and if the job requires galvanizing or powder-coating for corrosion resistance.
Every quote is written and handed to you before any torch is lit, under Haven Standard Clause 1. The price covers steel or alloy material, cutting and prep, welding (MIG or TIG as the joint requires), cleanup, and re-installation. We also photograph every weld before and after, log the wire type and amperage, and leave you a copy. Work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if a weld cracks or a pin loosens within a year, we fix it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?

There’s a short list of things an owner can safely check. Verify the gate moves freely by hand with the operator disconnected; note where it binds. Look for fresh rust or paint cracks at welds. Measure any visible gap between the arm and the bracket. That’s the boundary of safe DIY.
What you should not do: attempt to weld a loaded gate arm (spring tension can release unpredictably), grind a cracked bracket without supporting the gate leaf, or run the operator with a failed stop to “get by.” We’ve replaced three BFT gearboxes this year in Oakland because an owner ran the motor two more weeks on a broken stop tab. The weld itself is rarely the hard part; it’s the rigging, the alignment, and knowing whether the crack is the disease or a symptom of an undersized operator. Call (628) 270-2709 and we’ll price it in writing before any work starts.
FAQs
Properly fabricated and coated steel brackets last 12-18 years in Oakland’s inland neighborhoods, but drop to 8-12 years within two miles of the bay where salt air accelerates corrosion. We extend that by using hot-dip galvanized or powder-coated A36 steel, and we always seal the back side of welds where moisture collects.
Most cracks can be repaired if the bracket hasn’t distorted and the crack hasn’t propagated into the mounting bolt holes. We V-grind the fracture, weld with 7018 rod for strength, and add a fishplate gusset for reinforcement. If the bracket has bent or the bolt holes are wallowed out, replacement is the honest call. Call (628) 270-2709 and we’ll tell you which side of the line you’re on.
On-site hinge pin or stop-tab work runs 90 minutes to two hours. Arm bracket replacement on a dual-swing gate takes three to four hours because both sides must be aligned to prevent binding. Custom fabrication requiring shop time is usually a two-day turnaround. We stock common BFT bracket patterns on the truck for same-day completion when possible.
We carry A36 and 4140 stock, common BFT mounting plates, hinge pins, and bronze bushings on every Oakland service vehicle. OEM BFT cast brackets are ordered same-day from our supplier if your model requires the exact factory geometry. Most jobs need no wait; specialized orders arrive within 24 hours. Call (628) 270-2709 to confirm stock for your specific model number.
We’re also equipped to fabricate and weld for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls gate systems when the bracketry or hinge work crosses brands.
Tell me what it’s doing wrong, and I’ll tell you exactly what it needs. That’s how we’ve handled over 22,000 gates since 2014, every one with a written price before the first tool came out and a photo record when we left.
