FAAC doesn’t use one universal hinge or roller across its line. The 391 articulated arm systems don’t use a traditional roller at all; they pivot on a bronze bushing that wears differently. Check the silver FAAC data plate riveted to the motor housing; the series code is stamped above the serial number. If the plate’s gone, measure the roller diameter and the pin bore; we’ll cross-reference it.

We carry both OEM FAAC rollers (marked with the FAAC lion logo and a part number starting with 6300 or 7201 depending on series) and a commercial-grade aftermarket equivalent from Heavy Duty Gate Hardware that matches the spec sheet. Signs Your FAAC Hinge & Roller Replacement Is Failing

• Grinding or squealing at the open or close limit. The sealed bearing inside the roller has dried out or the race has spalled. Oakland’s marine layer accelerates this; we see it most in the Montclair and Piedmont hills where fog sits overnight.
• Gate drops or sags 2-3 inches when fully open. The hinge pin has wallowed out the bore, or the roller has flattened on one side from carrying the leaf weight off-center.
• Motor runs longer but the gate moves slower. The control board ramps up amperage to overcome increased friction at the hinge. Left alone, this burns out the FAAC control board; the roller is cheaper.
• Visible rust streaks below the hinge bracket. The zinc plating has failed, usually at the weld seam. In the Fruitvale corridor and near the estuary, salt air gets in and the part corrodes from the inside out.
• Intermittent “obstacle detected” errors with nothing in the path. The gate binds at the hinge, stalls the motor, and the board reads it as an obstruction. We check this with an ammeter; current draw spikes 30-40% above baseline when the roller is seizing.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground. You can check the roller for flat spots or rough rotation by hand with the gate in the open position and the motor disengaged (pull the release lever on the FAAC operator). You can also measure the roller diameter and bore to confirm the part number. What we don’t recommend: supporting a 300-600 pound gate leaf on a floor jack while working underneath it, or trying to weld a cracked hinge bracket without removing the leaf. The torsion on a sagging gate is unpredictable, and we’ve seen DIY attempts bend the mounting plate or shear the lag bolts.
