Meet the Oakland Team Behind Vance Gate Repair Oakland
We’re the crew that shows up when your gate won’t close at midnight or your opener starts grinding at 6 a.m. on a Sunday. Every one of us was hired for hands-on skill and kept for something harder to teach: we do what we said we’d do, we write down what we found, and we leave the job cleaner than we found it. That’s not a slogan. It’s how Adrian trained us, and it’s how we work in Oakland, Alameda, and every neighborhood in between.
Our People
Adrian Vance, Owner
I started in commercial access control in 2014, wiring up parking-gate systems for office complexes and medical plazas around the Bay Area. The habit that stuck was documentation - every terminal connection photographed, every relay setting logged, every job folder complete before I packed up. When I opened Vance Gate Repair Oakland, I brought that same discipline to residential gates. I still go out on the tricky calls: the 20-year-old FAAC underground operator with no manual available, the custom iron gate in Rockridge where the welds cracked because the original installer didn’t account for Oakland’s clay-heavy soil shifting every winter. I live in the Oakland Hills, so I know which neighborhoods get the fog-driven rust on hinges and which ones bake their control boards in afternoon sun. I answer the phone myself some nights, and I still review every photo log before it gets filed.
Marcus T., Lead Technician
Marcus has been with us four years, and he’s the one we send when a gate is doing something nobody can explain. He came from elevator maintenance, so he thinks in safety circuits and limit switches - a mindset that translates perfectly to gate automation. He’s factory-certified on LiftMaster, Linear, and Viking operators, and he’s the only tech on our crew who can reprogram a DoorKing board without calling the factory line. Marcus lives in West Oakland and bikes to most jobs when the weather holds. He keeps a notebook of every oddball fix he’s seen, and he’ll tell you straight if a motor is worth repairing or if you’re throwing money at a part that’ll fail again in six months.
Elena R., Senior Installer
Elena joined us in 2019 after six years installing automated gates for HOAs and apartment complexes in Contra Costa County. She specializes in new gate installations and full motor replacements, and she’s particularly good at the site prep that other crews skip: checking the footing depth, verifying the electrical run can handle the inrush current, making sure the gate leaf won’t bind when the ground settles. She’s installed gates in the Oakland Hills, the flats near the Coliseum, and everywhere between, so she knows which permits the city requires and how to get them without delays. Elena has a dog named Circuit who accompanies her on weekend estimate visits. She won’t install a gate without walking the homeowner through the safety edge placement herself.
Darnell K., Service Coordinator
Darnell is the voice you hear when you call (628) 270-2709 at 2 a.m. or 2 p.m. He’s been with Vance Gate Repair Oakland since 2021, and before that he dispatched for a commercial HVAC company, so he knows how to triage a real emergency from a situation that can wait until morning. He keeps the schedule honest - no triple-booking, no phantom arrival windows. Darnell grew up in East Oakland and knows the local streets well enough to route technicians around A’s game traffic and the perpetual construction on 880. He’ll ask you the right questions before dispatching: gate type, brand of operator, what it’s doing or not doing, whether there’s manual release access. That two-minute conversation saves an hour on-site.
Jin S., Apprentice Technician
Jin is in his second year with us, working toward his own lead technician role. He came from a welding program at Laney College, so he handles our gate parts and welding jobs: hinge rebuilds, picket replacement, wrought-iron repair on historic Oakland gates that the owners don’t want to replace. Under Haven Standard training, Jin accompanies a senior tech on every call for his first six months, then rotates through solo diagnostics under supervision. He’s already developed a specialty in realigning photo-eyes on steep driveways in the Piedmont and Montclair areas, where the standard mounting height puts the beam at the wrong angle for the slope. Jin documents every job with the same photo log we require of everyone - he’s got 847 job folders in his record already.
One Standard, Every Job

Vance Gate Repair Oakland operates under the Haven Standard, the same set of rules that governs every crew in our network across California. Clause 1 means the written price lands in your hand before any work starts. Clause 4 means you get a photographed record of what we found, what we adjusted, and what we installed - left with you and filed in our system. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers every repair we complete: if something isn’t right, we make it right, no charge, no argument, no expiration within that year. Adrian built this standard from commercial access-control habits, and every technician on our Oakland crew follows it on every residential call. Whether Marcus is tracing a faulty limit switch in a Temescal driveway or Elena is pouring a new footing in the Redwood Heights, the documentation, the upfront pricing, and the accountability stay the same.
We’re not a franchise. We’re independently owned and operated, and the person who answers your call knows your neighborhood, your gate type, and whether we’ve serviced your street before. That’s the standard. That’s the crew.
